Field Museum Scans Mummies with Latest X-ray Equipment

After decades of mystery, mummies in The Field Museum’s collection are beginning to yield their secrets.

At least one Egyptian mummy is only partly there as its torso and arms are missing. One Peruvian mummy was buried with a pot that has scientists wondering what it contained.

Field Museum researchers are using modern computed tomography X-rays to make images of mummies and other objects to provide new information about some of the oldest specimens in the Museum’s collections.
