White Light Three Dimensional Scanning

White light three dimensional scanner in the Division of Fishes at The Field Museum scanning a fossil fish. This scanner allows Fishes researchers to rapidly create accurate three dimensional models that can be measured or manipulated on a computer screen on printed with three dimensional models.  The video shows a single rotated pass of the fossil specimen.  Most specimens or artifacts can be accurately reconstructed with three independent scans with the object in different orientations such that blank spots (e.g., the bottom of the object) can be accurately scanned.  The scanning of the specimen with this scanner only takes one minute for each orientation, so the baseline data can be collected in just a few minutes for downstream analysis and cleanup.
