GREEN CLEANING

The Field Museum is concerned about the health of our staff and visitors as well as the environment. Housekeeping is performed in accordance with the LEED-recognized Green Cleaning program. This is a comprehensive approach to cleaning that combines chemicals, equipment, tools, disposables, and, most importantly, processes, training, and communication to produce an effective and safe cleaning program. The program provides guidelines for cleaning procedures, products and equipment, with one of its hallmarks being the usage of Green Seal-certified cleaning products. Green Seal is a non-profit organization with over 20 years of experience certifying healthy, green products and services that reduce impact on our health and the environment. The Museum also uses low-VOC (volatile organic compounds) paints in the building.

MICROFIBER CLEANING

The use of Microfiber Cleaning Cloths reduces waste by eliminating paper towel for cleaning. In addition, the Microfiber Cloths produce a significant cost savings to the Museum, helping keep admission prices low. The Field Museum also uses Microfiber Mops as a more effective way to clean floor surfaces.

STAFF TRAINING

The Field Museum's housekeeping staff is trained quarterly on green cleaning procedures. Whenever a new product is purchased, it is reviewed in staff meetings and tested by a team to report the effectiveness of the product.

BLUE CLEANING

The Field Museum’s “Blue Cleaning” program employs multiple technologies, which apply a low-level electrical charge to tap water, transforming it into an electrically activated water (EAW) cleaning solution that breaks apart and lifts dirt from surfaces like a magnet. Hard surfaces can then be wiped clean quickly, without leaving a surface residue like chemical-based agents.

ORBIO 5000c

Electrically restructures water and salt to create and store an environmentally friendly cleaning solution which can be dispensed for use in a variety of cleaning tools such as spray bottles, carpet extractors, automatic floor scrubbers. This technology eliminates the use of cleaning chemicals and reduces the carbon footprint for The Field Museum.

Activeion® Ionator EXP

This handheld cleaning device converts tapwater into a 99.9% bacteria* free cleaning solution. It eliminates the use of glass cleanersand most all-purpose cleaners. It is used to clean desks, doors, glass and Field Museum exhibits.
