Field Museum scientists and an international team of collaborators are undertaking biodiversity studies in the island archipelago of Fiji and the impact of habitat loss. They are studying a group of plants commonly called bryophytes (mosses, liverworts, and hornworts), ferns, as well as a group of organisms called lichens. Conservation International identified all the islands of Micronesia and Polynesia, including the islands of Fiji, as one of the thirty-five biodiversity hotspots in the world, and is referred to as the Polynesia-Micronesia hotspot.
