The Field Associates is a great way to get involved at a great Chicago institution, while meeting others with similar interests. I know of no other organization where you can get an inside look at one of the world’s greatest museums, listen to lectures from leading researchers on topics as varied as chocolate, poisonous fishes, and ancient Chinese rubbings, and volunteer time and talent if you choose to, such as helping out with local conservation projects or facilitating activities for children at the Museum.

My favorite aspect of the FA is combining learning, meeting new people and having fun. Learning about the Field Museum’s unique Maps exhibition, while tasting beverages from around the world at the Map Room in Bucktown demonstrates the distinctiveness of a typical FA event.

As a recent transplant to Chicago, I've found The Field Associates to be a great way to meet people for both professional and social networking. I can't think of a way I'd rather spend a weeknight than at a happy hour with my peers taking a guided after-hours tour through one of the Field's new exhibitions. The topics to learn about at the Museum are endless and fascinating and the access to The Field's research scientists makes the subject matter come alive!

I joined the Field Associates because I've always been a supporter of science and education, and because I was looking for a way to get more involved with a recognized nonprofit institution in Chicago. I learn something new and meet someone new at each event! The "Member's Night" has been my favorite event so far. It's an excellent introduction to all museum has to offer, and you get the chance to go behind-the-scenes of the museum to talk to scientists and conservationists about their research. Being able to touch some of the animal specimens was pretty cool too! Where else in Chicago can you hold a tarantula in one hand and a cocktail in the other?? Only at The Field Museum!

Through the Field Associates, I’ve experienced the Field Museum as more than a place that hosts interesting exhibitions. I’ve come to know the Museum as a world class research institution that studies our ever-changing world and makes real contributions to the problems it is facing.

I’ve taken part in small gatherings with scientists sharing their expertise on everything from dinosaurs and ancient Aztecs to Asian carp and conservation efforts for newly-discovered species in the Amazon, explored some of the 99% of the collection that is not on display with curators and collection managers, and even gone on trips “into the field” with Museum staff.

Supporting the Museum as a Field Associate has given me a firsthand look at the amazing discoveries, expeditions, and conservation efforts supported by the Field Museum, all while getting to know other young professionals who share my curiosity about the world—past, present, and future. I hope you will consider joining The Field Associates for the adventure that is sure to be 2012!
