Fossil Mammals Collections

The Fossil Mammal Collection at The Field Museum is an important national and international systematic and paleontological resource, totaling almost 60,000 catalogued specimens.  This collection is rated in the top 6 for fossil mammals with ~ 2,200 published specimens including 118 types, 543 figured specimens and over 1,500 referred specimens.

Collection Strengths include:

• Unique collection of Cenozoic mammals from Argentina & Bolivia
• Unique collection of Quaternary mammals from Australia
• Diverse collection from the Cenozoic of North America including Paleozoic through Pleistocene
• Unique zooarchaeological collection from Iran, Iraq, and Turkey
• Unique collection of endocasts showing the brain shape in a diverse array of fossil mammals
• Large collection of Ice Age fossils from North America, particularly the Midwest
• small but important Mesozoic microfaunal collections
