Edible Treasures Garden
The Edible Treasures Garden is a community vegetable garden on The Field Museum's West Terrace. A partnership between The Field Museum, Jewell Events & Catering and the Peterson Garden Project, the garden’s mission is to demonstrate urban vegetable gardening at one of the country's greatest natural history museums.
The garden will introduce visitors to a cultural treasure we all share - the value and diversity of heirloom seeds. Seed Savers Exchange (SSE), the largest non-profit seed bank in the United States, is a partner in this effort. Focusing on growing "seeds with stories," SSE founder Diane Ott Whealey selected the edibles in the garden to reveal how gardeners preserve history by seed saving, passing homegrown vegetables down from generation to generation.
The garden is tended by museum employees who donate their time. The garden was designed by Hoerr Schaudt Landscape Architects and installed by Kemora Landscaping, the design and materials used illustrate that urban vegetable gardening is not only enjoyable and delicious, but beautiful, too.
Additional funding was provided by the Community and Economic Development Association of Cook County and Cook County Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant in conjunction with the U.S. Department of Energy.
