Living with Wolves at The Field Museum: An Inside Look at Life as Part of a Pack

Popular myths and misconceptions surrounding wolves are explored in The Field Museum’s latest exhibition: Living with Wolves.  Opening March 22 and running through July 7, 2013, this unique exhibition goes inside the world of one of human’s most feared animals.  Living with Wolves presents the truth about these creatures’ importance to the ecosystem, their threats to survival, and their fascinating social nature.

Jim and Jamie Dutcher spent six years living in a tented camp observing and filming the so-called Sawtooth Pack.  What they discovered was an animal with more in common with humans than we ever could have imagined.  At the edge of the Idaho wilderness, the Dutchers formed a lifetime bond with the pack and caught on film intimate, never-before-seen behavior.  These vivid observations will be featured in an exhibition sure to reshape the popular image of wolves.

Detailed imagery within the exhibition will demonstrate the selection of pack leaders, the mourning of family members, and the birth of pups.  In addition, visitors will learn how this species plays a vital role in managing our ecosystem: they feed other animals, improve the growth of vegetation, and boost ecotourism.  However, if the wolf continues to be seen as a savage killer of livestock, and even humans, the threat to its survival will continue to increase.

The Field Museum’s Living with Wolves invites people to meet a wolf of compassion and emotion, not a vicious demon.  Discover the truth about the world of wolves and learn how this captivating animal is not so different from us after all.
