Cultural Heritage

Conservation is about sustaining the diverse cultures and biological ecosystems that inform us about how life on this Earth evolved. This knowledge may be the only insight we have into what our future will bring, and the understanding of the cultural histories of human interactions with ecosystems are crucial to the evolution story.

The Field Museum has been involved in conserving the Earth's cultural heritage since its founding. The Museum's original 1893 collection was by and large an anthropology collection, and the conservation of those materials and the preservation of the Earth's great cultural heritage sites have been part of our mission since the very beginning. Today, many of our members are interested in our cultural heritage mission as well as our commitment to conserving biodiversity. This is attested to by the popularity of cultural heritage themed exhibits from Ancient Americas and Ancient Egypt to Traveling the Pacific.
