The Museum's curatorial and scientific staff in the four departments of Anthropology, Botany, Geology, and Zoology conduct specimen-based research in the fields of systematic biology, conservation biology, geology, and anthropology, and also have responsibility for collections management and collaboration in public programs with the Departments of Education and Exhibits. Its library and archives are major resources to researchers in many fields. The Field Museum has been an international leader in evolutionary biology and paleontology, and archaeology and ethnography and more recently a leader in conservation and cultural understanding in the Andes-Amazon and the Chicago region led by the Environment, Culture, and Conservation group. The museum also serves as an academic hub for the region, involving three major universities, the University of Chicago, the University of Illinois, Chicago, and Northwestern University through teaching, advising graduate students, and involving a broad array of students in hands-on field and laboratory activities.
