Introduction:

An ecologist and conservationist with a special interest in South American forests, Nigel will be in residence at the Museum from August 2013 through July 2014. His research has included work on large-scale patterns in Amazonian tree communities, the endemic floras of Ecuador and Peru, and vertebrate abundances in Amazonian forests. He has been working with the Museum's rapid inventory team since 2001, and has taken part in five inventories in Ecuador and Peru. During his yearlong visit Nigel will be organizing and analyzing the large storehouse of biodiversity data gathered during the rapid inventories in the Andes-Amazon region over the last 15 years.

The photo was taken at a campsite on the Yaguas River in Amazonian Peru during a Field Museum rapid inventory of the area in October 2010. It shows Nigel pressing one of the 800 plant specimens collected during the inventory by the botanical team, which included Isaú Huamantupa (Peru), Zaleth Cordero (Colombia), and Roosevelt García (Peru).
