About this event

Join us as we continue our Virtual Professional Development Series!

In this virtual professional development workshop designed to help educators meet the new requirements of the TEAACH Act, attendees will explore salient points and places with which to begin teaching Asian American community history with a focus on the history of Chicago's Native Hawaiian community. Educators will:

  • receive a brief overview of the new legislation.
  • learn about the pedagogical approaches taken by Field Museum educators when creating culturally relevant and sustaining resources and experiences related to Asian American Native Hawaiian Pacific Islander (AANHPI) history.
  • become familiar with Chicago AANHPI communities.
  • interrogate the benefits and limitations of the myriad acronyms used for this work (AA, APA, AAPI, AA&PI, AANHPI, ANNAPISI, APIDA) and evaluate which might be appropriate for their own school communities.
  • hear from Kumu Hula Carole Lanialoha Lee and Exhibition Developer Ryan Schuessler about their involvement with the creation of Chicago’s Legacy Hula.
  • leave with ideas and resources from the Field Museum and AANHPI organizations to integrate into their own classroom instruction.

Sign up today to join us virtually on Wednesday, May 22, 2024, 4-5pm CST. A Zoom link will be sent to all who register. Registration will remain open until Monday, May 20, 2024.

Registration is FREE and open to formal and informal educators of all levels. Illinois Educators will earn 1 hour of Professional Development for attending this training.
