In creating tools for identification, ECCo uncovers new species

To help organize and improve identification resources for plants in Central America, ECCo’s Bil Alverson, a world expert on Bombacaceae—a plant family that includes balsa, baobabs, and kapok trees—spent two weeks in Costa Rica and Panama annotating more than 1,000 specimens at local museums. Bil uncovered three species new to science, along with two new species for Panama and four for Costa Rica.
