The Field Museum

The A. Watson Armour III Seminar Series is a weekly seminar highlighting the research of science professionals across a broad spectrum of scientific interests, disciplines, and lived experiences. This series connects the Field Museum&rsquo;s research, collections, conservation, and associated community with professionals at the forefront of life, geophysical, and social sciences. Lectures are open to the public and regularly highlight or complement research conducted by Field Museum staff and affiliates.

Ashley Dequilla (b. 1987) is an artist-filmmaker and archivist of Negrense, Tagalog and Ilonggo descent. She holds an MFA in Moving Image (&lsquo;23) and is completing her MA in Art History (&lsquo;25) from the University of Illinois Chicago. She is a Co-Curator Partner and researcher of the Philippine Heritage Collection at the Field Museum of Natural History. Ashley is the de facto archivist and collection manager for the Filipino American Historical Society of Chicago, securing the National Film Preservation Foundation award in 2024 and 2025 for 16mm home movies by Nicholas Galutera Viernes (1902-1991), the earliest Filipino American documentarian in cinema history.

Wilson Biodiversity Foundation to host Half-Earth Day, an annual event that convenes people from around the world and across disciplines to share their perspectives and provide thought leadership on how we can work together to safeguard biodiversity and ensure the health of our planet for future generations.&nbsp;
This year&rsquo;s Half-Earth Day theme, &ldquo;From Wisdom to Action: Mentorship as a Force for Biodiversity,&rdquo; will shine a spotlight on how mentorship acts as a powerful driver of conservation. During the day, participants will hear speakers discuss how mentorship is a force in science, arts and culture, business, and environmental conservation and how, together, we are driving action to protect biodiversity. &nbsp;<a href="https://www.fieldmuseum.org/our-events/half-earth-day/half-earth-day-2025-day-program">Learn more here</a>.&nbsp;
The event&rsquo;s evening ceremony will include a variety of performances, presentations, and awards, culminating in the presentation of the E.O. Wilson Legacy Award for Transformative Conservation Leadership to actor and environmental activist Harrison Ford. Ford, who was born in Chicago, has championed biodiversity protection and raised global awareness of the importance of conservation for over 30 years.&nbsp;
Field ornithologist David Willard will also be honored with the museum&rsquo;s Parker/Gentry Award for his nearly 50 years of work documenting and studying birds that collide with city windows.

Join us at the Field Museum on Saturday, November 8, 2025, from 10am-2pm for a professional learning opportunity designed to engage educators in deep content learning with the Museum&rsquo;s collections, with particular emphasis on the Cyrus Tang Hall of China.
This program will help educators incorporate drama in the classroom in order to engage students in the study of culture and religious traditions.
Participants will:

<li>Understand: How to use theater and storytelling to teach young audiences about culture and religious traditions.</li>
<li>Do: Participate in drama and improvisation activities (and shadow puppetry!) to explore the major themes and Buddhist values present in the stories of Guanyin and the Journey to the West.</li>
<li>Feel: Prepared to integrate drama and storytelling to teach cultural content.</li>
</ul>
Registration is open to formal and informal educators of all levels, though activities for this session are most applicable for teachers of Grades 3-8.
Illinois Educators will earn 4 hours of Professional Development for attending this workshop.

Meet Field Museum Senior Conservation Ecologist Lesley de Souza, featured scientist in the museum&rsquo;s sixth and final installment of the exhibition series <a href="https://www.fieldmuseum.org/exhibition/the-changing-face-of-science">The Changing Face of Science</a>. The exhibition highlights de Souza&rsquo;s life and work as a child of Brazilian immigrants, a mother, ichthyologist, and conservation biologist. It follows her career from being the only woman on an expedition to leading the largest multidisciplinary scientific expedition to Guyana's rainforest in 2024.

Explore strange stories and unsettling legends from the Field’s collections at this 21+ after-hours event!

Bats and batfishes may share a name, but they couldn&rsquo;t be more different in where and how they live! Bats are flying mammals that soar through the night skies, while batfishes are quirky-looking ocean dwellers with flat bodies and &ldquo;arm-like&rdquo; fins that help them walk along the seafloor. One thrives in the air, the other under the waves, yet both show how wonderfully strange and adaptable animals can be in their own habitats.&nbsp;
Come meet Lauren Johnson, Assistant Collections Manager of Mammals; Susan Mochel, Assistant Collections Manager of Fishes; Sophie Picq, Environmental DNA Research Scientist; and Linnea Lungstrom, PhD Candidate, Evolutionary Biology, and learn about these hauntingly mysterious animals.

Join the Field Museum and the E.O. Wilson Biodiversity Foundation for an inspiring, hands-on educator institute that connects global biodiversity challenges to local action. Begin with a deep dive into the species that comprise the dynamic ecosystems found in regional prairie environments. Then engage with fellow educators through a collaborative design challenge where you will use the Half-Earth Project Map, real-world data, and local knowledge to develop land-use strategies that best support both people and wildlife. Finally, explore ways and acquire resources that will help you bring action-oriented biodiversity conservation to your students.
Participants will receive professional development hours, classroom-ready materials, guidance, and resources that can be adapted to meet the needs of all learners in a variety of settings, a copy of E.O. Wilson's Half-Earth, and more!

Trick-or-treat yourself to a night at the Field Museum! This after hours Halloween party will be a scream for all ages. Whether you're a ghost, ghoul, or guest, you'll have the opportunity to trick or treat with SUE and our team of mad scientists, getting up close and personal with spooky specimens from the museum's collections along the way! Then, enter the realm of nocturnal creatures and take on our special walkthrough attraction, Dioramas in the Dark. Your senses will be put to the test in a series of challenges and obstacles as the lights go out and the &ldquo;Dead Zoo&rdquo; comes to life!

<h3>Dozin' with the Dinos Age Policy</h3>

Please carefully review our updated policy regarding age requirements for Dozin' with the Dinos attendees.

<li>Children under the age of 6 will not be admitted into a Dozin' with the Dinos event. Families and groups with children under the age of 6 may be asked to leave the event without a refund.</li>
<li>Adults may not attend Dozin' with the Dinos without a child between the ages of 6-12. If you attend the event and do not have children in your party, you will be asked to leave the event without a refund.</li>
<li>If you've purchased tickets incorrectly by mistake, you have until 2 weeks prior to the event to request a refund. After the two week period no refunds will be given, and you will not be admitted to the event.</li>
