Join the CPS Department of Social Science and Field Museum at the <a href="https://ccamuseum.org/">Chinese American Museum of Chicago</a> in Chinatown on Wednesday, August 6, 2025, from 9:30am-2pm for an engaging professional learning opportunity designed to help educators bring Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) narratives into their classrooms. This workshop will explore practical strategies to meet the requirements of the TEAACH Act as we reflect upon the questions:

Summer of SUE

Since their unveiling in 2000, SUE the T. rex has been studied by scientists around the world, yet mysteries remain about the Field&rsquo;s most famous fossil. What caused holes to form on SUE&rsquo;s lower jaw and what can this tell us about how they lived and died? Join paleontologist Jingmai O&rsquo;Connor, Curator of Fossil Reptiles, as she shares some of the mysteries about SUE the T. rex scientists are continuing to solve, and hear how she and her team were able to prove one of the most popular theories about the cause of holes in their lower jaw&ndash;that they suffered an infection from a protozoan parasite&ndash;couldn&rsquo;t be true.

Dicynodonts are a weird and wonderful group of mammalian ancestors famous for being the first group to evolve tusks. This session takes a deep dive into dicynodont tusk fossils...and all the amazing biological information preserved inside. Join us as we look at 240 million-year-old dicynodont tusks and "thin-sections" under a microscope to uncover how these creatures lived and grew.
Presenters include Megan Whitney, Field Museum Researcher and Assistant Professor, Loyola University Chicago; Kara Mia Ehler, Lab Technician, Loyola University Chicago.

Meet Bill Simpson, Head of Geological Collections and McCarter Collections Manager of Fossil Vertebrates, as he shares his experience with SUE from the very beginning of the project. Bill will discuss examining the fossil prior to auction, the auction itself, preparation of the fossil, facilitating research on SUE, providing input on the mounting, re-mounting in Stanley Field Hall, unveiling live on morning TV shows May 17, 2000, and directing the dismantling, move and re-mounting of SUE in 2018.&nbsp; A mixture of casts of SUE and real bones not on the mount will be shown.

Join us in person at the Field Museum for a professional learning experience and workshop in partnership with the Newberry Library.
Take flight with a unique two-day journey blending science, art, and exploration, indoors and out. In a partnership between the Field Museum and The Newberry Library, Winging It: The Art and Science of Birds offers educators and professionals an immersive experience that draws from two remarkable collections: the Field's world-renowned bird specimens and the Newberry's rare and historic ornithological texts. Discover how birds have inspired both scientific study and artistic expression through hands-on learning, guided exploration, and interdisciplinary collaboration. Whether in the galleries, the stacks, or under the open sky, you'll uncover new ways to bring the natural world to life.

<li>Day 1 of this two day experience will begin with a full day at the Field Museum, with programming from 10am-2pm. This will include coffee, parking, lunch, and if weather permits, we will also participate in a bird walk led by naturalist Soledad Maristany.&nbsp;</li>

For this week's PlayLab PlayDate, families with 2-6-year-olds are invited to a free, drop-in storytime celebrating SUE the Tyrannosaurus rex. This year the Field celebrates the 25th anniversary of SUE the T. rex&rsquo;s arrival at the museum. Join us for an interactive read-aloud, celebrating SUE, the largest and most complete T. rex ever discovered.

See live specimens of arachnids (spiders and Opiliones or &ldquo;daddy long-legs&rdquo;) and learn about their ecology, behavior, and biomechanics from the scientists who study them. Discover the critical role these common animals play in the environment and what we can do to protect them.
