Our project, the Programme Biodiversite des Ecosystemes Aquatiques et Terrestres dans le Rift (PBEATRA), is a collaboration between the Field Museum, two research stations in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, the Center for Natural Science Research (CRSN, Lwiro) and the Center for Hydrobiological Research (CHR, Uvira), and the Congolese Institute for the Conservation of Nature (ICCN, the equivalent of the U.S. National Park Service). With support from the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, we hope to reacquaint researchers and others with this special corner of the world. This initiative will provide support for the stations, develop and support educational programs at the stations and parks in the region, and document and study the biodiversity of the Albertine Rift.
