Biological Anthropology

The Biological Anthropology collection includes an extensive series of casts of representative specimens from the hominid fossil record, along with casts of various fossil non-human primates. The collection also incorporates a number of reconstructions based on fossils, several produced for past exhibitions, and an array of  human osteological specimens. Original fossil specimens are limited to a Neanderthal tooth and the skeleton of "Magdalenian Girl" from the Cap Blanc rock shelter in Dordogne (France), which is renowned for its frieze showing a group of horses. "Magdalenian Girl" is displayed in the permanent Evolving Planet. For comparative studies with other primates, research workers are able to use the extensive collections in the Mammals Section of our Zoology Department.
